AFS Report: Average Fitness Studio Revenue Was Less Than $300,000 in 2014

A new report shows the average revenue for a fitness studio in 2014 was $297,468.

The 2015 Fitness Studio Operating & Financial Benchmarking Report, which was released on Sept. 23 by the Association of Fitness Studios (AFS), Chicago, is the first study issued by AFS on the topic. 

“Never before in the history of the fitness industry has a study been produced that measures the baseline operating and financial metrics of fitness studios,” AFS Founder and CEO Josh Leve said in a statement. “Market research such as this report is a fundamental initiative of trade associations in any industry. We’re proud to present it to the fitness industry.”

One-on-one training made an average of $115,343 of revenue for studios while small group training made $60,952, group classes made $42,763 and supplement sales/retail sales made $11,831, all on average.

The average earnings before interest, principal, taxes, depreciation and amortization (EBITDA) was $78,086. Average EBITDA for facilities under 2,000 square feet was $56,943. For facilities from 2,001 square feet to 5,000 square feet, it was $88,015, and for facilities over 5,000 square feet, it was $109,288.

The average EBITDA margin (percentage of revenues) for studios in 2014 was 26 percent with the average EBITDA per square foot $27.31.

The identified data in the report also includes the impact of digital coupon sites, how much studios pay front-line staff, how studio owners compensate themselves and measuring profitability on a per-square-foot basis.
