The Top 100 Health Clubs of 2004

Welcome once again to Club Industry's Top 100, our annual listing of the largest clubs and chains in the country.

This listing serves as a benchmark, not as a hard-and-fast ranking. Participation is voluntary and, when necessary, industry estimates are used.

As more outside interests look to our industry as a viable investment opportunity, a guide to the fitness industry's size and strength is more relevant. While we try to ensure accuracy, we ultimately depend upon the clubs and chains for their corporate revenue figures, which determine the rankings.

We try to get information from non-participating clubs through industry estimates, by speaking with competitors, and by relying on industry experts.

In the Deserving Recognition list (see list to the right), we acknowledge non-participating clubs that belong on the Top 100, but from whom we could not get hard revenue numbers. With the help of Rick Caro, president of Management Vision and a member of the Club Industry editorial advisory board, we estimated their corporate revenue. While these estimations are rough, we report them to give an idea of where these clubs belong on the Top 100. We hope to increase participation next year, and we will institute more industry-weighted estimates to fully recognize all clubs deserving to be listed in the future.

The clubs in the Deserving Recognition list aren't the only companies missing from the Top 100 list. The industry's major licensors/franchisers are also absent for the most part.

Some licensors/franchisers decline to share revenue and others add the revenue of individual licensees/franchisees to corporate revenue when, in fact, only the appropriate licensing/franchising fees should be included. For that reason, we list licensors/franchisers separately by number of locations rather than by revenue (p. 27). We believe that listing them in this manner will still give readers an idea of how large these companies are in relation to each other. However, it should be noted that, like revenue, the number of licensed, franchised and owned locations is self-reported or gathered from company collateral material.

In analyzing the industry to help make estimates where needed, Caro noted some trends, particularly that 2003 generally was a stronger year than 2002. It was still a year with pressures from a soft economy and an increasingly competitive environment, especially in certain metropolitan areas, he says, but plans for much greater growth in 2004 seems likely.

“Several club companies are expected to exit the industry either by an IPO (initial public offering) or a sale to a financial or strategic buyer. In all cases, the resulting club companies will attempt to grow those businesses at greater rates than in the past,” Caro says.

We also hope to grow our Top 100 list to include more of the industry's top players so they may take their rightful place among industry leaders.

Deserving Recognition

Estimated revenues, based on information supplied by Rick Caro of Management Vision, rank the following clubs. In the future, we hope these clubs will participate in our Top 100 survey. In the meantime, we will continue refining our internal system to provide a more accurate picture of revenues and place these clubs in their rightful spot on the Top 100 list.
