Rock Climbing Legend Joins El Cap Family to Create Exceptional Climbing Experiences for Members and Raise Awareness about the Sport in New Communities

ENGLEWOOD, Colorado - (May 8, 2019):  El Cap, the parent company of Earth Treks’ and Planet Granite’s world-class climbing facilities, announced today that professional, adventure rock climber Alex Honnold has joined the company’s Board of Directors as an independent member.  Honnold, one of the most recognized and followed figures in the rock-climbing world, and star of the 2018 Oscar-winning Best Documentary, “Free Solo”, plans to represent the interests of the climbing community as El Cap continues to expand its aspirational rock climbing and training facilities across the country.

Honnold is best known for being the first and only climber to free solo the 3,000 foot El Capitan vertical rock formation in California’s Yosemite National Park. He is known throughout the community for his humble demeanor, passion for rock climbing and visionary training techniques.

“Alex’s approach to the world blends a love for climbing with environmentalism, philanthropy and equality which aligns both with our core values and the qualities we see in our membership base every day,” said El Cap CEO, Robert Cohen. “We couldn’t be more excited to work with Alex to continue developing the climbing experience for our members and to amplify our efforts in sharing the love of climbing and the outdoors with athletes and enthusiasts nationwide.”

“Getting people passionate about seeking adventures, setting personal goals, and getting outside is what I’m all about,” said Alex Honnold, who also heads up the Honnold Foundation, which works to increase solar energy access worldwide. “Rock climbing changed my life, and El Cap is the best gym for training seasoned climbers and introducing new adventure-seekers to the sport.”

With a climbing heritage of over 25 years, El Cap has been established as the largest climbing gym community with 11 climbing, yoga and fitness centers across five regions. The dedicated staff of over 1,000 team members serves more than two million guests annually.

Alex Honnold will be appearing at several El Cap facility events to offer tips, answer questions and take part in rock climbing clinics.
