YMCAs in New Jersey to Merge Next Year

Two YMCAs in New Jersey announced a merger that will formally begin on Jan. 1.

The Somerset Hills YMCA and the Somerset Valley YMCA announced their merger earlier this year after several months of analysis and planning, according to a Y press release. In February 2014, the two Ys entered into an agreement to share management resources. Based on the success of that initial partnership, the boards of both Ys voted to work towards a permanent unification, according to the press release.

The combined association will serve five branches in Somerset County, NJ.

According to MyCentralJersey.com, the Somerset Valley Y had been running budget deficits for several years while the Somerset Hills Y generated more revenue. David Carcieri, who will serve as CEO of the new association, told the website that over the past few years, "the financial position of both associations has improved."

"By joining together, our goal is to increase the Y's capacity and potential to better serve our communities," Carcieri said in an email to the website. "We will use our resources efficiently and effectively for future growth by ensuring we deliver quality YMCA services based on members' interests and to meet the critical needs of each local community."
