Joe Weider, insightful seminars and the latest products in the industry. All three will converge at the Club Industry show Oct. 8-11 at the McCormick Place (Lakeside Center) in Chicago. What more could you ask for? How about a reception, early morning workouts and the opportunity to network with others in the industry?
This year's show is set to be a special one due to the presence of Joe Weider — fitness guru, training principle developer and Mr. Olympia founder. Club Industry magazine will be handing Weider its first Lifetime Achievement Award in a ceremony on Thursday morning after the Keynote Address kicks off the day. After the award presentation, attendees will have an opportunity to whisk their way to the show floor to see some of the hottest products on the market as the trade show floor opens for the show.
And there will be plenty to see as more than 200 exhibitors will occupy the trade show floor at the McCormick Center.
Vendors offering everything from nutritional products to high-tech entertainment and back-end software to locker room ammenities and cardio and strength equipment will be there — and many will be offering money-saving show discounts. No matter what is on your shopping list this year, you're bound to find it on the show floor.
Some of the new products set to debut at the show include the newest strength and cardio equipment, technologies to help you enroll new people and set up programs, pro shop items, nutritional supplements and software to help you manage better. Biometrics Nutrition & Fitness will show off its online weight management product. At the Dr. Smoothie booth, you can sample the company's new line of 100 percent fruit, no sugar added smoothie concentrate. Hollman has the key to a new lock that is keyless and cardless and is unlocked using a user-selected four-digit code. Makoto USA offers a new sport arena system to help improve mental processing speed and reaction time. SciFit Systems will let you try out its recumbent steppers.
But shopping for products and programming isn't the thing that sets Club Industry 2003 apart from the local mall. It is the cutting-edge education delivered in the seminars and educational tracks.
Dr. Kelly Brownell, director of the Yale University Center for Eating & Weight Disorders and author of Food Fight: The Inside Story of the Food Industry, America's Obesity Crisis and What We Can Do About It, will offer the keynote presentation on Thursday, Oct. 9 from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. prior to the award ceremony.
But that's not all. Attendees can participate in more than 125 seminars. CEUs will be available from 11 organizations as well as certification exams from six of the associations.
Two special seminars, New News in Tennis Programming: Getting the Most Out of the 50+ Market and Dealing with Difficult People or How to Avoid Punching That Jerk Next to You, also will be offered. In the tennis seminar you can learn about new opportunities that exist for recruiting and retaining the 50+ players at your tennis facility. As a special opportunity, clubs that adapt new programming can gain added funding. Up to $5,000 in matching grants will be awarded.
This year's show also offers six paid conference sessions in the weight loss/weight management/nutrition area: Delivering Weight-Control Guidelines that Your Clients/Members Will Listen To; The New Science of Weight Management; A Proven Program for Weight Loss and Cellulite Reduction; Gaining Profits by Losing Pounds: Making Money in the Weight-Loss Business; Weight Management Strategies That Work; Revving Up A Dead Engine: Nutrition Guidelines for Your Members.
Get a feel for the spa experience on the show floor where you can see the treatment and ambience that can help make your day spa work for your facility. Listen to Melinda Minton, president of the Spa Association, talk about spa research and studies on profitability during a Friday afternoon session: Spotlight on Spas: A State of the Industry Overview of How They Work in the Health Club Environment.
Not all education happens in the conference rooms at Club Industry 2003.
You can see demonstrations of group exercise programs by visiting Club Studio for 45-minute sessions during show hours. Participants at press time include: Iron Grip; Body Wedge; Real Women, Real Fitness; Powerhouse Pilates; Ladeshore Athletic Clubs; and SPRI Products Inc.
An early morning Pilates workout on Thursday (7:00 a.m. - 7:45 a.m.) at the Palmer House Hilton will allow you to see a special floor Pilates program that you can adapt for your facility. Early morning workouts in the exhibit hall (7 a.m. — 9 a.m. on Friday and Saturday) allow you to try out the hottest new equipment on the floor and then ask manufacturers about the equipment afterwards. Don't worry about missing breakfast — free continental breakfast will be served on the floor.
Sure early morning workouts and sitting in conference rooms sounds like fun and a great way to network, but you won't have to wait long to relax and meet your peers. The Wednesday evening reception, held at the Palmer House Hilton, will include food, music, beverages and the opportunity to meet old and new friends as you gear up for another exciting show.
So, whether Chicago is your kind of town or not, this year's Club Industry show is your kind of show.
If you haven't registered yet, it's not too late. Go to http://national.clubindustry show.com/ and sign up to attend.
