Girl Drowns in American Family Fitness Swimming Pool

A nine-year-old girl drowned at a Midlothian, Virginia, fitness facility on Tuesday night.

Raneen Khattab fell into the American Family Fitness Swift Creek swimming pool, was pulled from the water unresponsive and was pronounced dead after being rushed to a local hospital, according to The Richmond Times-Dispatch.

Police are investigating the incident, but foul play is not suspected, according to the Times-Dispatch.

“All of us at American Family Fitness are deeply saddened about the incident, and our most sincere condolences, thoughts and prayers go out to the deceased and her family,” General Manager Dayle Mayton wrote in a statement to the newspaper. “Discovery is ongoing with the police and family members, and we cannot comment any further at this time.”

The American Family Fitness website states facility swimming pools do not have lifeguards on duty, and children under 13 "require adult supervision" with adults in the wet area at all times.
