Bally Completes Sale of 39 Clubs to Blast Fitness

Bally Total Fitness, Chicago, announced Monday that it has completed the sale of 39 clubs to Blast Fitness Acquisition LLC, an affiliate of Blast Fitness Group LLC. The companies initially announced the deal on April 10. Terms were not disclosed.

Blast Fitness, an Auburndale, MA-based club chain that offers memberships as low as $10 a month, acquired Bally clubs in Boston (three); Buffalo, NY (one); Charlotte, NC (two); Fresno, CA (five); Milwaukee (four); Providence, RI (one); and St. Louis (two), plus three Bally clubs in Connecticut and all 18 Bally clubs in Texas, consisting of nine in Houston, five in Dallas-Fort Worth and four in San Antonio.

As of this morning, neither company’s website reflected the changeover in clubs.

Blast will honor all Bally memberships from the 39 clubs, and transferred members will have reciprocal membership privileges at the remaining Bally clubs in other markets for the next year, according to a press release. Bally now operates about 60 clubs around the country.

Last year, Bally sold 171 clubs to LA Fitness, Irvine, CA, for $153 million. One source said Tuesday that LA Fitness closed 55 of the acquired Bally clubs by the end of 2011. In some cases, memberships from the closed Bally clubs were moved to larger LA Fitness clubs nearby, according to the source.
