Tennessee-Chattanooga Breaks Ground on New Rec Center

CHATTANOOGA, TN – The University of Tennessee at Chattanooga recently broke ground on a new student recreation center. Construction on the $24 million facility, funded by a dedicated student fee imposed by a student vote, is expected to take approximately two years.

The center will be built in two phases. Phase I will cost $16.5 million that includes construction, design and furnishings for 100,000 square feet. Included in the Phase I project are two full-size basketball courts that can be converted into four indoor soccer areas. There will also be aerobics and yoga studios, a martial arts room, free weights, workout machines, cardio space, a 1/8-mile indoor walking track and a climbing wall and bouldering wall.

The estimated cost of Phase II is $7.3 million. The design for Phase II, which includes an indoor pool, will begin this summer, with construction beginning after Phase I opens.
