The University of Missouri–St. Louis held a grand opening ceremony earlier this month to celebrate the opening of its new $36 million recreation and wellness center.
The 100,000-square-foot facility, which opened in August, has numerous features to provide fitness and recreation opportunities to students: a two-story climbing wall, 155,000-gallon pool, sauna, elevated indoor track, three-court gymnasium, group fitness rooms, and cardio and strength-training equipment.
The center is open to all students enrolled at the university. Faculty, staff, alumni and community members will be able to buy club memberships.
First proposed in 2004, the rec center won the support of students in a March 2012 vote that added a fee of $19.25 per credit hour. The University of Missouri System Board of Curators subsequently approved the plan, and construction commenced in 2013.
The architect is Cannon Design.
