Adelphi Adds Fitness Center to Historic Hall

GARDEN CITY, NY -- Adelphi University recently unveiled a new recreation fitness center in its historic Woodruff Hall building. The renovation is part of a $117 million, 25-acre campus enhancement project.

The 5,000-square-foot fitness center includes a selectorized weight training circuit, 14 free weight stations, a stretching area and a four-lane, 25-yard swimming pool. Its 28 cardio machines have iPod connections, 17-inch personal TV screens, enhanced training with landscaped views, virtual trainers and USB data connections for tracking personal workouts.

Originally opened in 1929, Woodruff Hall is one of the campus’s original three buildings. It was designed by McKim, Mead and White, the architectural firm responsible for the Morgan Library in New York and the Boston Public Library. Cannon Design, Grand Island, NY, was the renovation architect.

A new glass lobby attached to Woodruff Hall’s south side is the primary entry for the university’s Center for Recreation and Sports, which opened in the summer of 2008.
