AAHPERD Name Stays the Same

RESTON, VA – The American Alliance for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (AAHPERD) will keep its name.

The AAHPERD Board of Governors approved a name change to the American Alliance for Health and Physical Activity at its meeting last September, but during the AAHPERD Alliance Assembly in March in Baltimore, delegates defeated the motion for the name change (106 votes for, 129 votes against). Any change in the organization’s name requires a two-thirds vote from the Assembly.

“The intention of the Board of Governors’ action was to have a more inclusive name for our alliance,” Judy Young, vice president for programs for AAHPERD, said before the March vote. “There’s not really any change in what we’re going to be doing in our organization.”

AAHPERD has had its current name since 1978.

In other news, Monica Mize was voted as the 2007-2008 president-elect of AAHPERD. Mize served the past two years as Southwest District governor. She is a professor in the department of health promotion and human performance at Weber State University in Ogden, UT.
