Washington, DC, Tops List of Fittest Cities

SEATTLE -- The Washington, DC, metro area was named the fittest among the 50 biggest cities in the United States by the American College of Sports Medicine’s (ACSM) 2009 American Fitness Index (AFI) report.

ACSM released the report Wednesday at its annual meeting in Seattle. The report was produced in conjunction with the WellPoint Foundation.

Rounding out the top five fittest metro areas were Minneapolis-St. Paul, Denver, Boston and San Francisco.

The AFI data report considered a number of factors for its decision and compiled a composite score based on preventive health behaviors, levels of chronic diseases and health care access, as well as community resources and policies that support physical activity.

People who live in the Washington, DC, metro area were more likely to eat five or more fruits and vegetables per day and were less likely to smoke, researchers said.

In addition to publishing a data report, AFI is designed to help communities identify opportunities to improve the health of their residents and expand community assets to better support active, healthy lifestyles.
