Violence Erupts Outside Health Clubs

An alarming number of incidents of violence took place outside health clubs this year.

In January, an employee of a Sport & Health club in Gaithersburg, MD, was sexually assaulted and robbed shortly after she left the health club.

In February, a Bally Total Fitness employee was assaulted upon his return to his club in Jersey City, NJ. The employee suffered a broken nose and cuts on his face and body. Also that month, two members of a Life Time Fitness in Indianapolis were held at gunpoint but were unharmed.

24 Hour Fitness, San Ramon, CA, handled two cases of violence. In May, a man was stabbed in the parking lot of a 24 Hour club in Buena Park, CA, and later died. In August, the wife of a 24 Hour employee was stabbed in the parking lot of a club in Sacramento, CA. She was later reported in stable condition.

In October, a member went on a rampage inside a Gold’s Gym in Latham, NY, injuring another member and destroying equipment. He later died of cardiac arrest after he was tasered by police
