Lifestyle Family Fitness to Lay Off 94 Employees

Lifestyle Family Fitness, St. Petersburg, FL, will be laying off 94 employees from Aug. 16 through Dec. 31 of this year.

The Tampa Bay Business Journal and the Tampa Bay Times reported the news on Friday.

Lifestyle Family Fitness is listed in the 2012 Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Notices that have been filed with the Florida Department of Economic Opportunity. According to the Lifestyle Family Fitness notice that it filed on Thursday, the layoffs are a result of the sale of “substantially all of the company’s assets,” the Business Journal reported.

Lifestyle had 2,718 part-time and full-time employees at the end of 2010, according to its entry form for Club Industry's Top 100 Clubs list. For this year's list, which will be published next month, the company did not provide employee numbers.

LA Fitness, Irvine, CA, announced on Monday that it had entered into an agreement to purchase the remaining assets of Lifestyle Family Fitness, which has 33 clubs in Florida. LA Fitness hopes to complete the sale within the next several weeks.

Jill Greuling, executive vice president of operations for LA Fitness, told Club Industry on Wednesday that LA Fitness was meeting with Lifestyle Family Fitness management this week to discuss employment opportunities.

“We need the Lifestyle Family Fitness employees to continue operating our business,” Greuling told Club Industry.

In a letter to Lifestyle Family Fitness employees obtained by Club Industry, Stuart Lasher, chairman and CEO of Lifestyle Family Fitness, thanked the employees for their contributions to the company.

“I have enjoyed working with each of you and I am pleased to know that you will be in good hands with LA Fitness,” Lasher wrote. “I want to wish all of you the very best of luck.”
