Flooring and surfacing products reveiw.
Whether you’re building a new facility or renovating your existing one, a lot of emphasis is placed on the color of the walls and what your front desk will look like. But don’t forget about what’s underneath you. The flooring you choose should be given a lot of thought, too. For example, if you put down flooring in your weight room that can’t take a lot of abuse, you’ll be replacing it in a few years.
For the most part, there is a different kind of flooring for every room of your facility, such as the weight room, aerobics room, locker room, front desk area, hallways, racquetball courts, etc. There is a lot of diversity in color, shape, size and function. Which one is right for you depends on what you’re looking for and your budget. The following is just a small overview of what’s available in the market.
Airex mats are made of a closed-cell specialty foam that resists bottoming out. They are warm and comfortable to the touch. These mats will not absorb water or fluids, and are sanitized, a treatment that inhibits the attack of bacteria, which shortens the effective life of most foam mats, according to company officials. These lightweight mats roll up easily, may be used inside or outdoors, and can be cleaned with soap and warm water.

The Exerflex Aerobic Floor System is designed of three components. The wood surface is made of 7/8-inch beech hardwood and is prefinished with three coats of an aerobic traction polyurethane. The boards meet at a tongue-and-groove joint and are held together by a spring steel clip, which allows the floor to flex along this joint upon impact and then spring back into place. At the point of impact, the .75-inch foam underlayment beneath the wood-and-clip assembly absorbs the shock of the participant’s impact on the floor and dissipates the resultant energy, notes the company.
