The Neuro Studio uses neuroplasticity-based training to help patients around the world

WASHINGTON, D.C. (April 1, 2021) — For the first time, millions of people worldwide who live with a neurological condition now have an online option for live weekly fitness classes and specialized training programs designed to meet their specific needs. The courses are hosted by The Neuro Studio, a leading provider of training, education and advocacy for people with neurological conditions and those who care for them, including physical therapists and fitness professionals.

The courses represent a first for people with neurological conditions: live, weekly classes and customized online programming tailored to meet their fitness needs.

“Fitness should be an integral part of the wellness regimen for anyone with a neurological condition, yet our needs aren’t addressed in traditional settings,” said Mariska Breland, The Neuro Studio co-founder and a world renowned Pilates instructor who has been living with MS since 2002.

“The Neuro Studio gives people with neuro conditions a road map for recovery and longevity, so they feel empowered to overcome the challenges they face living with a chronic condition.”

The Neuro Studio has worldwide reach

The Neuro Studio, founded in 2013,  is led by entrepreneur Breland, author of Pilates for MS, and Meghann Koppele Duffy, a Columbia University-trained applied physiologist and movement specialist who has been working with neuro clients for more than 20 years. The pair have pioneered a research-based approach to fitness and have trained and certified more than 1,400 students around the world. They’ve taught courses across the U.S. and Canada, as well as the United Kingdom, Italy, Australia, Japan and Dubai.

For the first time, Breland and Duffy are bringing their proprietary methods online for live classes, ensuring people with neurological conditions have affordable, convenient access to tailored physical fitness instruction.

Live classes meet wide range of needs

Live classes cover a range of topics and typically last from 20 to 45 minutes. The lineup includes:

  • Disease-specific sessions to address the symptoms of MS, Parkinson’s, and stroke
  • Advanced movement flows to help newly diagnosed patients maintain strength and mobility
  • Seated classes designed for people who use wheelchairs or can’t stand for long periods
  • Guided meditation to demystify the practice and help people incorporate mental health training into their daily care regimen
  • Live chats with Breland, Duffy and other neuro and movement specialists who discuss trending topics and take questions from students

The Studio includes rich online platform

The live classes are part of The Neuro Studio’s broader online platform designed to offer 24/7 access to affordable, practical resources aimed at improving quality of life and alleviating symptoms for neuro patients. Classes are recorded and part of The Neuro Studio’s rich online archives of online courses, workshops (many offered for credit through continuing education programs) and instructive lab sessions.

The methods are rooted in Breland’s insight into living with a neurological condition as well as Duffy’s decades of experience working with clients who have complicated neurological issues and injuries. The method uses Pilates, functional training and neuroplasticity techniques to address symptoms common to people with neurological conditions, like issues with gait, balance, weakness, spasticity, rigidity, foot drop and bladder and bowel issues. In addition to improving patients’ quality of life, Breland and Duffy focus on preventing injuries and slowing progress of a disease’s symptoms.

“Our programs are tailored to diseases and symptoms, so there’s something customized for your needs whether you’re newly diagnosed or you have been suffering for years,” Duffy said. “Prevention and practice are so important, so it’s never too early or too late to start.”

Monthly subscriptions are affordable — and accessible

Subscriptions for patients start at $25 per month and offer condition and symptom-specific workouts, a Jump Start program and more. The Neuro Studio also offers continuing education credits and intensive online training for a range of professionals, including Pilates instructors and physical therapists. Practitioner courses include Understanding MS, Understanding Parkinson’s, Anatomy in Action and more.

“When I was diagnosed with MS, no one could tell me what kind of exercise was safe,” said Breland. “But finding the right exercise program helped me with balance, strength and flexibility — all things you lose with a neurological condition. My goal is to help people avoid pain and unnecessary disability, and live full, active lives.”
