The weight loss therapist with exclusive access to study the long term results of former contestants on NBC’s The Biggest Loser is partnering with a Point Pleasant Beach, New Jersey gym to tackle the hidden emotional struggles accompanying sudden extreme physical transformations.

Armando Gonzalez, known in the fitness industry as Dr. Mondo, is teaming up with The Lift Gym in Point Pleasant Beach to offer clients the full spectrum of weight loss behaviorism by training their minds as well as their bodies.

The collaboration makes The Lift Gym the first gym in New Jersey to offer a comprehensive weight loss program that addresses the emotional as well as physical needs of its members.

Based in Sacramento, Dr. Mondo became the first therapist to conduct exclusive academic research on former contestants of NBC’s hit show The Biggest Loser.

In his studies, Dr. Mondo observed that 95 percent of those who experienced a sudden dramatic physical transformation were not able to sustain that weight reduction. Among his findings, Dr. Mondo determined clients who understood and changed their relationship with food had a better chance at maintaining their weight loss.

“They’re losing so much weight in such a short amount of time that their entire psychological world changes dramatically,” Dr. Mondo said. “With too much change happening too quickly, they’re not prepared for the psychological changes that come along with the physical changes. Many wind up gaining back the weight because that’s a comfortable state for them.”

The Lift Gym, voted 3 times as the Asbury Park Press’ ‘Best of The Best’ Fitness Gym, has provided weight loss challenges for the past 4 years. While owner Matt Jennings said most clients had been successful after the six-week nutrition and exercise-based programs, many struggled to maintain their trimmed bodies because they resumed their former eating habits.

“When someone understands that the road to success will always have bumps…hills…potholes and detours, they will better be prepared both mentally and physically to deal with   these setbacks as long they have the tools at their disposal,” said Jennings, a former bodybuilding champion who has trained a number of supermodels, elite bodybuilders and high school/collegiate athletes.

Dr. Mondo and Jennings will outline the program at 7 p.m.. during a May 17 presentation at The Lift Gym, 413 Railroad Square, Point Pleasant Beach.
