YWCA Fitness Centers Closing

NATIONWIDE -- Two YWCA fitness centers are closing, and another one may be on the verge of closing, according to multiple media reports.

The YWCA of Greater Flint (MI) will close both its health and fitness center and its day care center on Dec. 20, according to The Flint Journal. The organization had lost almost $330,000 last year. Members of the fitness center began collecting signatures this week on a petition to keep the fitness center open.

The Lincoln (NE) YWCA will cut its fitness, aqua and child care programs by Dec. 31, eliminating 13 full-time and 26 part-time jobs, according to the Lincoln Journal Star. The 76-year-old, 36,000-square-foot YWCA building also is being sold for almost $1.6 million.

The YWCA in Lima, OH, which had planned to close its fitness and aquatic center at the end of the year, may be giving the center new life. A task force of YWCA board members, staff members and fitness and aquatic members has been formed to come up with a way to keep the center open, according to the Lima News. The board hopes to have suggestions from the task force in the next 60 to 90 days. The fitness and aquatic center posted a loss of more than $126,000 in 2007, the newspaper reports.
