YMCA Takes Over Florida City Rec Center

The YMCA of Broward County (FL) has opened a new location in Pembroke Pines, FL, in a recreation facility that was formerly managed by the city.

The Y took over operations of the former Pembroke Shores Recreation Center as part of a public-private partnership with the city, which also has ceded management of a local aquatics center to the nonprofit.

In a story in the Florida-based Sun-Sentinel newspaper, Sheryl Wood, the president and CEO of the Broward Y, said the partnership was formed in order to maximize the community’s resources. “It’s a cost-effective way to do some good work,” Wood said.

The facility was remodeled and expanded from 23,000 to 43,000 square feet prior to reopening as the YMCA Pembroke Pines Family Center. Its features include basketball and racquetball courts, a fitness area with cardio and strength machines and free weights, indoor cycling and group exercise studios, a children’s rock climbing wall and a youth activity area with interactive fitness games.
