The YMCA of Middle Tennessee is closing another location.
The Rutherford County Family YMCA in Murfreesboro is closing on Aug. 7, the YMCA said in a release, marking the eighth facility closure since a joint staff and volunteer task force was formed in 2013 to evaluate operations and financial sustainability.
"After several months of exploring all possible options, including partnerships in both the private and public sectors, we have made the difficult decision to close the facility and to focus on serving Rutherford County through our North Rutherford YMCA and community-based programs," YMCA of Middle Tennessee President and CEO Dan Dummermuth said in a statement.
Dummermuth said the YMCA of Middle Tennessee was no longer able to support operating losses totaling "several hundreds of thousands of dollars a year" given current economic conditions and financial commitments. The Rutherford County YMCA was losing more than $300,000 annually. The closure affects about 4,400 households, or 5 percent of the Y's total membership base.
Members of the Rutherford County Family YMCA will receive a complimentary association-wide membership through Aug. 31 to use any of the other 15 YMCA of Middle Tennessee centers and will have the option of having their membership transferred to one of those facilities.
The closure will impact around 150 staff members. Those staff members will have the first option to look at available positions at other centers, according to a WSMV report.
"While we announced an earlier restructuring of our operations in March, we delayed a decision on the Murfreesboro location to allow staff and volunteers more time to consider all potential options for continued operation of the facility," Dummermuth said. "As with any comprehensive review, there were many elements to consider, and it took us a bit longer to explore all the viable options in Murfreesboro than in our other facility reviews."
The YMCA of Middle Tennessee lost $4.14 million in net assets from operations in 2014 and lost $7.34 million in 2014, according to an independent auditor's report released by the YMCA (bottom of this page).
The task force's findings led to closures of YMCA locations at Cool Springs, Harding Place (Nashville), Maury County, Mt. Juliet, North Clarksville, Oakland and Wadlington Tennis Center (Nashville). The YMCA of Middle Tennessee said the discontinued operations impact less than 10 percent of the total membership base.
The YMCA of Middle Tennessee will operate 15 centers after the Murfreesboro location closes.
“While discontinuing any operation is never easy,” Dummermuth said, “we do believe these outcomes reflect the thoughtful and strategic approach taken with every difficult decision we’ve made. The changes ensure we’re continuing to steward our resources responsibly.”
