Ex-YMCA Coach in Connecticut Court for Alleged Sexual Assault on Minors

A former YMCA swimming and wrestling coach who already was facing charges of first-degree sexual assault and illegal sexual contact is in court today facing additional charges of fourth-degree sexual assault, illegal sexual contact with a minor and second-degree threatening.

Martin Gringas, 33, who currently is in custody at Bridgeport Correctional Center on a $175,000 bond, has pleaded not guilty in Litchfield (CT) Superior Court, according to court documents reported in The Litchfield County Times, New Milford, CT.

The latter charges are the result of incidents that took place between August 2009 and June 2010 and are unrelated to the initial charges, which stemmed from a February 2008 incident, the newspaper reported.

In police reports detailing the more recent incidents, which center on Gringas’s alleged abuse of two young brothers now 10 and 12 years old, the victims’ father stated that Gingras paid for the boys’ YMCA memberships so they could participate in his wrestling class at the Canaan Family YMCA in Canaan, CT.
