Downtown YMCA in San Diego Closing after 90 Years

The Downtown YMCA in San Diego will close at the end of October, the San Diego Union-Tribune reports.

The historic building houses the Y in its basement while the rest of the building operates as a low-cost hotel. Plans for the building, which opened as the Army-Navy YMCA 90 years ago, are still undecided, the newspaper reports.

From the Union-Tribune:

"YMCA spokesman Sidd Vivek said county YMCA officials are searching for a new downtown site, preferably one they could own or operate under a long-term lease. He said about 100 people use the YMCA branch daily and they will be able to use any other county branch at their current monthly membership rate of $44."

Vivek added that the YMCA of San Diego County has been looking for a different location for the Y for a while and will continue its search.

The YMCA of San Diego County operates three other branches—the Mission Valley YMCA, the Toby Wells YMCA and the Hazard Center YMCA—as well as a skate and bike park.
