The world's largest YMCA is slated to open next month in a developing commercial district in Calgary, Alberta, Canada.
The $3.5 million, 330,000-square-foot Brookfield Residential YMCA will open its doors on Jan. 14 in southeast Calgary's Seton commercial district, according to the Y. It is the latest addition to the YMCA Calgary, which previously opened the 284,000-square-foot Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge in January 2018.
The Brookfield Y features three full gymnasiums, two multipurpose fitness studios, two professional-sized hockey rinks, a three-lane, 200-meter indoor track, a 250-seat performance theater and a full-scale Calgary public library. A 50-meter, 10-lane competition pool with dive towers and a leisure pool with slides and a surf simulator are scheduled to open on March 1, 2019.
“Calgary communities are changing," Ken Lima-Coelho, vice president of community engagement for Calgary YMCA, told Business in Calgary. "The role of the Y is constantly changing. The Y has always been known as a healthy centre of community. We provide opportunities for all ages and abilities and financial backgrounds to participate in our programs and services, which are designed to help develop a healthy spirit, mind and body, and to ultimately build healthy communities. Through an involved needs assessment, the City of Calgary determined that the growing southeast communities were in need of a multifaceted recreational facility as well as a competitive aquatic facility for Calgary’s amateur sport community.”
The Y began offering tours and selling memberships on Dec. 8.
Membership pricing begins at $73.50 per year for adults (ages 26 to 64); $49.25 for seniors (ages 65 and older); $55.25 for young adults (ages 18 to 25); $35.50 for youth (ages 12 to 17); and $30 for children (below age 12).
The facility is named after Calgary-based developer Brookfield Residential, whose total 2018 assets top $4.5 billion.
