Upgrades Planned at University of Hawaii

HONOLULU – The campus center at the University of Hawaii will receive a makeover, according to Honolulu TV station KGMB9.

The state of Hawaii released $1 million in design and construction funds for the renovation, according to the station. The center was built in 1974 and holds recreation facilities as well as the campus bookstore.

According to the University of Hawaii’s campus center board’s fact sheet about the renovation and expansion project, the recreational facilities will have extended evening and weekend hours and will include improved showers and lockers, weight training and cardio equipment, multipurpose gyms and studios, and multi-sport gyms for basketball, volleyball, badminton and indoor soccer.

The total cost is expected to be $28.7 million to renovate and to expand the campus center by 64,000 square feet. Funds will be provided through the Hawaii state legislature, private donations, other campus center services revenue and an increase to the campus center operational fees, which are $45 per semester.

The completion of the project is expected by fall 2008, the TV station reported.
