What better time to be in New York than early June?” Zari Stahl, Club Industry East group show director, says of the upcoming Club Industry East conference. Stahl promises a great line-up of seminars, exhibits and educational opportunities to go along with a beautiful time of year (June 8-11) in the Big Apple.
The show will give an expected crowd of 3,000 people panel discussions, a consultant's corner, morning workouts and more at the Hilton New York.
Stahl says that one of the show's most anticipated special events is Keith Hernandez's free keynote address from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Thursday, June 9. With a 17-year major league baseball career, Hernandez earned a National League MVP award while leading his St. Louis Cardinals to a World Series Championship in 1982 and four years later won the 1986 World Series title with the Mets. “Seinfeld” fans may also remember Hernandez for his appearances on the sitcom. At the show, the six-time National League All-Star and current baseball color commentator will speak on “Building a Home Team That Can Win It All.”
“He epitomizes building a team,” says Herbert Greenebaum, marketing manager for the Club Industry East show.
Thursday's schedule also includes the panel discussion, “The Best and Worst of Exercise Programming,” from 2 p.m. to 3 p.m., at which a number of experts will discuss what works and what doesn't when it comes to exercise.
“We want attendees to walk away with what they can apply to their business,” Stahl says about the panel session. “They will be learning from some of the most successful people in the industry.”
Another free event from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on Friday, June 10, is the leadership summit, “Execs in the City — How the Biggest Clubs in the Big Apple Make Their Operations Work.” The session will include some of New York's most successful fitness entrepreneurs, and how they make their facilities the toast of the town, Stahl says.
“This is information that works for anyone, not just for those in New York,” she says. “The same principles that make a club work in New York are the same anywhere else. It's universal.”
Other feature attractions include Club Studio, open during exhibit hall hours, where attendees can get a look at new group exercise programs during 45-minute sessions. Attendees can also visit the Club Industry Career Connection to see the latest job opportunities at for-profit and nonprofit facilities. Club management can get their questions answered at Consultant's Corner, which offers free advice from consultants.
“This is one of the largest line-ups we've ever had for this,” Greenebaum says about the Consultant's Corner. “Their expertise goes across the board. I don't know anywhere else people can get this free insight.”
Before participating in these events, attendees have the opportunity to join in the festivities at the opening night reception from 5:30 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. on Wednesday, June 8, and to keep up their exercise routines with early morning workouts from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. on Friday, June 10 and Saturday, June 11.
Those looking to beef up their knowledge can attend some of the 80-plus presentations or earn continuing education credits from a dozen organizations. Seminars run throughout the show and include topics related to business and financial management; sales, marketing and promotion; service and member retention; programming, wellness and health care; people and self-management; and a specialized track for personal trainers. Some seminar highlights include: Getting Your Clients to Train Like Pros, The Cancer WellFit Program, Selling to Baby Boomers and the Senior Market, and Take Your Corporate Fitness/Wellness Program to the Next Level.
The International Fitness Professionals Association, the American Council on Exercise and the National Strength and Conditioning Association will also offer various certification exams at the show.
If that wasn't enough to see and do, attendees also should set aside a few hours to peruse the show floor. With more than 275 booths with major equipment manufacturers of everything from apparel and uniforms to insurance and treadmills, the vendors offer insight into some of the latest trends and products in the industry. The exhibit floor will be open from 12:30 p.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, June 9, and Friday, June 10, and also 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, June 11.
“New York is such a vibrant market,” Stahl says. “It's an important show, and we won't be back until 2007.”
