Gold’s Plans to Expand In Hawaii

HONOLULU -- After the closure of four Gold’s Gym locations left the chain with only one gym in Hawaii, Gold’s Gym International is planning to open several franchised fitness centers in the state, according to the Honolulu Advertiser.

Keith Albright, senior vice president for franchising at Gold’s, says the company is hoping to open five to seven Gold’s Gyms in Hawaii in the next few years. The company, which is seeking one or more franchisees to expand the chain, will take over the corporate-owned location in Honolulu.

“We think we can make it easy for them to start by taking over that location and use it as a launching pad,” Albright tells the newspaper. “We’re very excited about the opportunity we have in Hawaii. It’s kind of like a relaunch of the brand.”

24 Hour Fitness has eight locations in Hawaii, and Curves International has more than 20 Hawaii locations, according to the Advertiser. Other competitors in the state include smaller chains and independent health clubs.

Prospective franchisees need to have a minimum net worth of $800,000 and liquid assets of at least $300,000, Albright told the newspaper.
