Fort Benning Soldier Dies after Fitness Test

A soldier at Fort Benning, GA, collapsed during a physical fitness test earlier this month and later died at a local hospital.

Spc. Anthony Walter McGill, 26, of Walnut, CA, assigned to the 192nd Infantry Brigade, collapsed while on a two-mile run on Sept. 4, the Ledger-Enquirer of Columbus, GA, reported. McGill was immediately assisted by military personnel and taken to St. Francis Hospital in Columbus, where he never regained consciousness, authorities told the newspaper. McGill died on Sept. 6.

A public affairs spokesperson said the death remains under investigation.

Last month, the Army announced it would postpone plans to implement a new physical fitness test. The new test, which had been in the pilot stage, consisted of five events, including a 1.5-mile run.
