Baltimore Police Applicant Dies during Run

An applicant for the Baltimore Police Department collapsed and died while completing a 1.5-mile fitness run.

Gilnord Charles, 29, participated in the run last Friday that was part of the department’s pre-hire agility test. After collapsing during the run, medics and emergency personnel, who also were participating in the run, tended to Charles before he was transported to a local hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

A police spokesperson told local media that there was no indication that Charles would have any trouble prior to the run.

In addition to the 1.5-mile run, which must be completed within 16 minutes, 28 seconds, applicants must complete 29 sit-ups within 1 minute, according to the Baltimore Police Department website. Male applicants must complete a minimum of 20 push-ups in 1 minute while female applicants must complete a minimum of 10 push-ups in 1 minute.

Also, applicants must be able to sit and reach 16.5 inches and bench press 64 percent of their body weight at least one time.
