Woman Crashes Mercedes into California Wellness Center, Killing One

The driver, 80, was attempting to park her Mercedes when the vehicle crashed through LifestyleRx and into an exercise classroom.

A woman crashed her car into a through a wellness center Tuesday morning in Livermore, California, killing one person and injuring six in an exercise classroom.

The driver, an 80-year-old Livermore resident identified as Mineko Deakin by ABC7, was attempting to park her Mercedes in front of LifeStyleRX when the vehicle crashed through the facility's plate glass entrance just before 6:30 a.m. The car traveled nearly 70 feet through the building before colliding into the classroom, according to the Livermore Police Department media release.

"We believe that she had pedal confusion. That's where you hit the gas pedal instead of the brakes," Livermore Police Dept. Officer Traci Rebiejo told ABC7.

Lawrence Livermore Lab Chief Financial Officer Kathy Baker, 49, died from her injuries while being treated at the hospital. The six who were injured were transported to area hospitals for treatment.

Police ordered Deakin, who was not injured, not to drive and said her license will be suspended, according to KTVU.

The investigating officer did not believe alcohol or drugs were a factor in the collision, and the investigation is ongoing. LifeStyleRx is closed until further notice, according to its website.

LifeStyleRX is Stanford Health Care - Valley Care's wellness center. The 70,000-square-foot center provides medical-based education and fitness services to its members. It has heated indoor pools, steam rooms, group exercise studios, fitness equipment, a child care center, massage services, nutritional counseling, an indoor walking track, a NCAA-sized gymnasium and full-service locker rooms, according to its website.
