Beaumont Medical Center, Detroit, opened its third Beaumont Weight Control Center and Fitness Center last month. The newest facility is in St. Clair Shores, MI, and is affiliated with Grosse Point Beaumont Hospital while the other two are in Rochester Hills and Royal Oak.
Individuals engaged in regular physical activity during a weight control program have superior weight-loss results compared with those not participating in exercise, says Dr. Wendy Miller, medical director of Beaumont Weight Control Centers.
"We wanted to offer a comprehensive center focused on weight management, fitness and healthy lifestyle that is closer to home for those in St. Clair Shores and surrounding areas," Miller says. "Having the fitness center right on site and staffed with exercise physiologists to help develop individual plans is a convenient option that will help participants to achieve and maintain their weight-loss goals."
The programs offered at the St. Clair Shores center is based on years of experience and research and is focused not just on weight loss but also on wellness and physical fitness, Miller says. She says the community is excited about having a comprehensive wellness center close to home, while physicians are pleased to have a center where their patients can optimize their health and well-being.
"The Beaumont Weight Control Centers have been in existence for 30 years now, and we have been planning this newest center for about three years," she says. "We are pleased with both the Weight Control Center suite and the fitness center. The facilities offer a warm and relaxing environment, and we have a team of professionals, including physicians, dietitians, exercise physiologists and psychology staff, to help educate and support individuals on a pathway to better health."
At the new Weight Control Center, the staff can customize the weight-control program for each individual. Through a personalized approach, the team of weight-loss experts can help individuals to meet goals including preventing, improving or resolving weight-related medical conditions, such as Type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, joint pain and obstructive sleep apnea.
"Our experienced team of professionals empower participants with the education, skills and support necessary for achieving a healthier weight and lifestyle," Miller says.
For example, the multi-disciplinary team offers a variety of treatment modalities including low-calorie diets that include meal replacement shakes, bars and entrees; group sessions led by a dietitian, psychologist and exercise physiologist; fitness classes; individual consultations with a team member; weight-loss medications; and minimally invasive bariatric surgery.
The 7,900-square-foot facility includes a large area for group fitness classes; a studio for smaller group fitness classes, small group training, and personal training, as well as strength training and cardio equipment. The fitness center shares a reception area with the weight-loss clinic.
At the fitness center, individuals can choose from more than 60 classes per week. Peggy Kurza, fitness center manager, says many of these classes are designed for specific populations, such as the arthritis fitness class; Restart 101, which targets adults looking to restart a fitness routine; and yoga and Tai Chi, which is modified for adults who cannot do floor exercises. In addition, the center offers Zumba. Adults also can attend education classes covering such areas as osteoporosis health, women's health and living with arthritis.
"Our areas of focus are to reach the adults in our communities looking to improve their health in a comfortable and friendly environment with people similar to themselves," Kurza says. "Our classes are taught at an encouraging and challenging pace. We have certified fitness instructors, personal trainers and a full-time exercise physiologist."
