Scam Helps Build Y Awareness

SOUTHINGTON, CT — The YMCA-Southington (CT) has a purported scam to thank for increasing the public's awareness of its programs and services. Last month, two teens allegedly went door to door falsely claiming that they were selling magazines to raise money for their Y-sponsored soccer team.

The YMCA-Southington notified its members about the scam through an e-mail blast and by contacting local media, says John Myers, YMCA-Southington spokesman.

Initially, Myers was afraid the scam would hurt the Y's fund-raising efforts, but so far, it hasn't. In fact, it's given the Y a chance to get its message out.

“[The scam] gave us an opportunity to talk to our members and community about initiatives, programs and services we offer to help out the community,” he says.
