How to Leverage Wearable Technology to Boost Member Retention

By 2022, it’s estimated that one in four Americans will use some form of wearable technology at least once per month.

Additionally, wearable tech was the American College of Sports Medicine's (ACSM) top fitness trend for three of the past four years.

“This is a trend that is not slowing down and [is] something that our members have almost come to expect—the ability to track their data, to see feedback from their workout and have that experience,” Emily Sopo of Myzone said in Club Industry’s latest free webinar, now available for on-demand viewing.

In "How to Increase Engagement in Fitness Programming Using Wearable Technology," Sopo delves into the finer points surrounding wearable tech and how it can be effectively leveraged in a club context to solve one of the biggest challenges for operators today: retention.

If a member is truly engaged, they will experience a genuine emotional connection with their club and its staff, Sopo said. This means they will be more likely to purchase often, more likely to spread positive word-of-mouth messages and will be less sensitive to pricing. Most importantly, members who are never spoken to are nearly three times more likely to cancel their memberships than members who feel regularly engaged.

"This comes down to the idea that the interactions between your staff and your members matter a lot, and we can actually use wearable technology to foster those interactions,” Sopo said.

In the 40-minute webinar, Sopo detailed how to build dynamic programming that incorporates wearable tech and ultimately boosts member retention.

In short, members who use wearable tech remain with their club 24 percent longer than those who do not. They also visit their club 33 percent more often, have a Net Promoter Score (NPS) that is 11 points higher and make three times as many secondary spends, based on data collected by Myzone.
