Repositioning the Fitness Industry as an Essential Industry

During the chaos of the COVID-19 pandemic, the fitness industry was viewed as non-essential in most states. In addition, the media and government officials, despite data to the contrary, had many negative misperceptions about the industry including being destinations that spread COVID, a reputation that many people in the public still believe. In addition, the financial impact to the fitness industry of layoffs, bankruptcies and significant decrease in revenue is not really understood by the media, public and officials, which has led to a lack of relief for the industry. This presentation will share how we can think about repositioning our industry to be viewed as essential.

Presenter:

Francesca Schuler, CEO, In-Shape Health Clubs

Reactivate Frozen Members Scared by COVID-19

A number of members are still afraid to come back into gyms due to COVID-19 concerns. Health club operators need to show that they are operating safely and that research shows gyms are safer than many of the other places they may already be frequenting. Find out how to put their fears at ease and how to re-engage them not just online but actually inside your facility.

The Future of Your Personal Trainers

During the shutdowns, online training skyrocketed, offering gyms an option for additional revenue, but also showing many personal trainers a way to generate revenue on their own without a brick-and-mortar location. Bad experiences at some fitness brands with long hours, lack of pay and mistreatment by management has led some trainers to organize. What does this mean for your personal trainers and the future of your personal training department? Should you switch to a contract model for trainers? How can you ensure you are rewarding these vital members of your staff and offering them a career with a path for progression when so many other options are now available to them?

Rob Beale, fitness director, Third Space

Laurie McCartney, president, Ascend Learning (NASM)

Christy Browning, director of marketing, Power Systems
