Genesis Health Clubs Buys Two MVP Athletic Clubs in Florida

Genesis Health Clubs, Wichita, Kansas, has purchased the Spanish Springs and Brownwood locations of MVP Athletic Clubs in The Villages, Florida, for an undisclosed amount, the company announced on May 31.

Included in the deal were exclusive rights to be the sole health club operator in The Villages, paving the way for future expansion, according to the announcement.

For MVP Athletic Clubs, the sale moves the brand out of Florida; the brand now is exclusively in Michigan with seven clubs. However, the company still owns RDV Sportsplex (which includes RDV Athletic Club) in Orlando, Florida.

The two new locations have moved Genesis Health Clubs beyond the Midwest and Mountain states where it previously focused. It now has 59 clubs in seven states. The introduction to both the East Coast and the South opens the door for additional expansion in Florida, Genesis Health Clubs Owner and President Rodney Steven said in the media release.

“When we enter a new market, we try to get enough clubs to really reach a critical mass,” he said. “This is just the first step for Florida; I can’t wait to share more as we continue to grow and invest in the Sunshine State.”

Genesis is a family-owned business that has operated in Wichita for more than 30 years, starting with just one club and initially growing gradually, he said.

“Six years ago, our company doubled in size overnight, and it’s been steady, sustained growth since then, even through the pandemic,” Steven said. “We went from a locally owned Kansas company to a national brand; it’s been quite a ride.”

The Genesis business model involves acquiring health clubs and revitalizing them through new equipment, remodels, and added features and amenities, according to the media release.

“One by one, we purchased legacy landmark facilities, found strategic acquisitions, and remodeled aging clubs into beautiful new Taj Mahals, surpassing their former glory,” Steven said. “It’s what we do, and we have big plans for The Villages. It’s such a vibrant community, and we can’t wait to help bring even more fun and fitness to the residents over the years.”

He added, however, that MVP are great operators.

“So we’re starting from a good place,” he said.

MVP Sports Clubs President Karl Droppers said: “It has been our privilege to work with the residents and community members of The Villages for the past 12 years. MVP was honored to be part of making The Villages America’s Healthiest Hometown. We know Genesis Health Clubs will be a great partner with the community and provide growth and services for years to come.”

The transition to Genesis provides all MVP members, including those under a Medicare- sponsored plan, the ability to continue membership with no interruptions and no price increase.
