Air Force Opens $23.5 Million Fitness Center

The Spangdahlem Air Base in Germany is home to the U.S. Air Force's newest fitness center.

According to an article on the base's website, the $23.5 million, 69,843-square-foot gym opened this week to replace one of the oldest Air Force fitness centers still in use, the 60-year-old Skelton Memorial Fitness Center.

Although the Skelton facility is still open by reservation for group fitness classes and squadron physical training, the majority of its programs and services are now offered at the new center, which features new cardio and strength equipment as well as equipment from the older facility, according to the article.

The Spangdahlem center also offers more cardio and aerobics classes, improved programs, more room for unit physical training and a track where airmen can take their physical fitness tests during inclement weather.

"Our new fitness center demonstrates just how much the Air Force values physical fitness and its direct link to generating and maintaining resilient airmen," Maj. Elizabeth Johnston, 52nd Force Support Squadron commander, said in the article. "We have dedicated almost $25 million to build and outfit a state-of-the-art facility during this era of unprecedented financial constraint. It really shows how deeply committed the Air Force remains to the important role fitness plays in taking care of people."

The base also features a CrossFit gym and a health and wellness center.
