Community Builders

The Racquetball & Fitness Clubs (part of the Spectrum chain) have been an important part of the fabric of San Antonio. The company has enjoyed a significant market share of membership and has strived to become part of its members' lives.

In keeping with this tradition, Racquetball & Fitness has been a major sponsor of the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society Golf Classic since 1987. In that time, the tournament has grown into one of the premier golf outings in San Antonia, raising much-needed funds for the society. Employees and members participate in the event from start to finish, as both players and volunteers. The all-day event draws more than 280 players and nets more than $100,000 annually, with the proceeds going to help the leukemia and lymphoma patients served by the South/West Texas chapter.

This year, Racquetball & Fitness was proud to sponsor the 5th Annual 5K Run/Walk, with the proceeds benefiting the Special Olympics. More than 450 runners, walkers, canines and babies in strollers braved the rain to participate.

In 1988, the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports created ACES (All Children Exercising Simultaneously). The ACES program was designed to introduce children around the world to exercise in an entertaining way. Each May since 1990, Racquetball & Fitness has been conducting the ACES event in 17 local elementary schools, involving close to 15,000 children a year. For 15 minutes, the entire student body fills the schoolyard and participates in a huge group exercise class to music.

The company's group exercise department has a long history of community support. Each year, Racquetball & Fitness hosts fund-raisers for a variety of local and national causes. Some of those from this year included an indoor-timed 5K run/walk to benefit the American Heart Association; a "Workout for Hunger"; and "Kickboxing Mania" events that benefited the SAMMinistries, a local organization dedicating to helping the homeless of San Antonio.

In our industry, 80 percent of new members come from internal referrals. Knowing this, Racquetball & Fitness has built its membership by establishing a partnership with its members.
