In Brief

Planet Fitness

A Planet Fitness franchise in the Bronx, NY, set a company record in March by pulling in $300,000 in EFT payments for the month. The club on 225th Street in the Bronx opened in 2007 and is a 15,000-square-foot gym that hosts 1,700 workouts per day. Al Grier, manager of the Bronx facility, was awarded a new Suzuki motorcycle by club owners Jeff and James Innocenti and Gino LaVerghetta.

School Fitness

Georgia legislators voted in favor of a bill that requires annual fitness assessments for students in grades 1-12, beginning in the 2011-2012 school year. The Student Health and Physical Education Act (SHAPE), previously passed as Georgia's House Bill 229, was passed by the Senate by a vote of 34-14. The SHAPE Act was forwarded to Gov. Sonny Perdue for final approval. The bill mandates that each local school district conduct an annual fitness assessment program, as approved and funded by the state Board of Education (BOE). The districts also would be responsible for sending a physical fitness report card to parents or guardians and sending aggregate test results to the state BOE.

Personal Training Institute, Jericho, NY, and HIT Sports Training, Worthington, OH, also made the list this year. This marks the fourth consecutive year that Franchise Business Review has presented the awards. The firm says it researched more than 400 franchise brands for the study.
