If any health club member demographic is easy to overlook, it's the growing number of under-18, post-millennials: Generation Z. They may not personally possess the spending power of older adult generations, but their cultural and financial value to a club is undeniable, according to recent research.
Gen Z currently comprises 15 percent of all health club members, the IHRSA 2017 Health Club Consumer Report recorded. This number has steadily risen over the last few years and compares to 10 percent in 2012.
Twenty-seven percent of Gen Z belong to YMCAs or Jewish Community Center facilities and have shown interest in clubs that specialize in boxing, yoga and indoor cycling.
The report states: "Opportunities remain to engage the youth population in developing healthy activity habits to stave off obesity and complement participation in sports."
Although their guardians are often paying dues, club members age 6 to age 12 pay the highest average dues of any age bracket: $63. Members age 13 to age 17 pay the next-highest amount: $58.
However, members under age 13 visited their health club only 65 days in the year, the report said, the least frequently of all demographics. Members age 13 to age 17 visited 78 times.
"If your company aims to serve the Gen X market, be sure you are giving them reasons to return to the club frequently to utilize facilities and programs that complement not only their health and fitness goals, but those of their Gen Z children as well," the report states.
