Sad Farewell

As we were going to press, we received some sad news about one of our newest advisory board members, Julie Main. Julie had battled cancer for about 10 years, living in remission for many of the last few years, but she passed away early this month after cancer returned.

The co-owner of West Coast Athletic Clubs, Santa Barbara, CA, had accomplished much in her 53 years. Not only was she married with two children, but she also had served on the board of the International Health, Racquet & Sportsclub Association and then as its president for one year. She also served as president of the California Clubs of Distinction.

And through her battle with cancer and subsequent temporary defeat of it, she helped develop a program called Cancer Well-Fit, which helps clubs work with cancer patients. That's how I first came to know who Julie was. I heard her speak about this program at a conference several years ago. Little did I know then that eventually, I'd call upon her to serve on our advisory board and as one of our Best of the Best contest judges.

Each of the last two years, I was thrilled at how willing she was to judge the contest and how cheery her e-mails were. I always believed her when she said it was an honor for her to judge the competition.

She will be missed not only by her family but also by many people within the fitness industry.
