In 2009, work began on the landmark Auburn University Wellness and Recreation Center in Auburn, Alabama with the grand opening for the start of Fall semester 2013. The $72 million, 240,000-square-foot facility features the country’s longest indoor running track, a five-story rock-climbing wall, and a 45-person tiger-paw-shaped hot tub. The complex complies with green building, or LEED, standards, reinforcing the university’s pledge to make sustainability among Auburn’s guiding principles.
Central to the massive Auburn facility is its courtyard, a tranquil area featuring benches, plants, and a water fountain. It’s surrounded by racquetball courts, weight-training areas, group exercise studios and other center amenities, including a large outdoor pool and leisure area; cardio/fitness training areas; eight basketball courts; a golf simulator; strength equipment; a multipurpose court; outdoor recreation; and a game room.
Auburn University’s comprehensive, multi-level Wellness and Recreation Center is anchored by nearly 300 pieces of Cybex equipment, representing virtually all of its cardio and strength-training lines. The Lower level offers more than 20 machines, including 770T treadmills, Arc Trainers, recumbent bikes and upright bikes and testing area. The center’s Heisman level includes more than 100 pieces, including full VR3 and Eagle strength circuits, two jungle gyms with a Jungle Gym Crossover and 2 Bravo Functional Trainers, and two complete free weight and plate loaded areas. The Mezzanine level, which also boasts more than 100 machines, encompasses more treadmills, Arc Trainers, recumbent and upright bikes, along with a Cybex Total Access Circuit and Bravo Functional Trainer.
“Of particular importance to Jennifer Jarvis, Auburn’s Director of Campus Recreation, was meeting requirements for the Americans with Disabilities Act,” notes Tony Kizzire, Director, North American Sales at Cybex. “To that end, we included several circuits of the Total Access line.” The Total Access is a line of commercial fitness equipment designed to be accessible to the physically impaired but which does not exclude other exercisers. This allows fitness enthusiasts who have physical or sensory limitations to take advantage of fitness training on the same gym floor and using the same equipment as those who do not.
“This facility is uniquely Auburn,” says Jarvis. “We are excited to open our doors for the first time and give our students a world-class facility that will serve their fitness needs.” As far as equipment goes, “we did a lot of research and we found that Cybex offers the best by far for our university,” she adds. “We’re very excited for our students because they are going to get the best.”
Beyond its work with Auburn University, Penn State, Arizona State University and many others, Cybex has long supported collegiate athletics in general, and is a Diamond-level sponsor of the National Intramural-Recreational Sports Association (NIRSA), an organization that both comprises and supports leaders in collegiate recreation.
The facility was designed by 360 Architecture, in Kansas City, Missouri, in association with Infinity Architecture of Montgomery, Alabama. The project was headed up by James Braam, senior project director at 360 Architecture.
