"I had 17 amazing years with a company and people that I care deeply about," Malkovich told Club Industry. "I will always appreciate the company's founder (Mountainside Fitness President Tom Hatten), who trusted a then 27-year-old kid to be the CEO of his company. My past eight years as CEO have been the most enjoyable of my career. I will forever be proud of what we accomplished.

"But, all good things come to an end, and this next iteration of Mountainside Fitness, Core Concepts, and Fit Republic needs a new voice. I likewise need a new challenge and look forward to this yet-to-be written chapter."

Malkovich added he is leaving "on the best of terms" and wished the company success in the future. He also said there will not be a new CEO immediately named and that Hatten will reassume that role.

"We have had a great relationship these past 17 years, and I as well as everyone here at Mountainside Fitness wish him the best in his new endeavors," Hatten told Club Industry. "He will always be a lifelong member. I am extremely confident Billy will go on to do great things in his career."

Mountainside Fitness is No. 41 on Club Industry's Top 100 Clubs list with a reported 2013 revenue of $27 million. Mountainside, which Hatten founded in 1991, has 10 clubs in the greater Phoenix area. One of those clubs is inside Chase Field, home of Major League Baseball's Arizona Diamondbacks. Earlier this year, Mountainside received $40 million in funding from PNC Mezzanine Capital.

Hatten added that Mountainside Fitness has four new clubs in development, three of which are scheduled to open next year.
