Midtown Athletic Clubs Sells Midtown Health to HealthFitness

Midtown Athletic Clubs has sold its affiliate company Midtown Health to HealthFitness for an undisclosed sum, the companies announced on April 27.

Midtown Health manages 25 onsite fitness centers nationwide, including hospital wellness centers, community fitness centers and corporate fitness clubs.

All 575 Midtown Health associates, including President Debra Siena, will join HealthFitness.

The sale allows Midtown Athletic Clubs to focus on growing its chain of eight luxury sports resorts, Midtown Athletic Clubs CEO Steven Schwartz said in a media release.

“Our Chicago flagship has been tremendously successful,” he said. “We have decided to focus exclusively on that model and are reinvesting all proceeds of this sale into the Midtown Athletic Clubs not yet converted to the Chicago format, look and feel.”

The flagship location includes a hotel, and the company plans to add a hotel to at least one other location, Schwartz told Club Industry.

HealthFitness, a Trustmark company, is a provider of fitness and recreation, wellness, and injury prevention and treatment programs for companies and organizations.

“This acquisition is highly complementary and part of our strategy to help clients create healthy communities in a post-pandemic environment,” Kevin Slawin, Trustmark’s president and CEO, said in the announcement. “This brings together great capabilities and additional scale at a time when personalized connections through a blend of virtual and onsite programming has never been more important.”

“This is an excellent cultural fit,” Sean McManamy, president of HealthFitness and a member of Trustmark’s executive leadership team, said. “Like HealthFitness, Midtown Health has a proven ability to manage fitness centers profitably, while putting people first and increasing engagement by integrating wellness into each client’s DNA. This is a transformative time for HealthFitness, and we are excited to welcome our newest associates from Midtown Health.”

Siena said Midtown Health is excited to join HealthFitness and Trustmark and be part of a financially strong mutual company.

“We share HealthFitness’ commitment to our people and helping the clients we serve increase participation in their wellness programs and optimize their health,” she said. “We are excited to join a like-minded and industry-leading company.”
