CrossFit Studio Owner Shot to Death

The owner of a CrossFit studio in Toledo, OH, was shot and killed Monday outside of his fitness facility.

An autopsy showed that Joseph Lengel Jr., 57, died of a single gunshot wound to the left side of his chest, the Toledo Blade reported today. Police responded to the shooting shortly before 6 a.m. Monday at CrossFit Toledo-Intensity Fitness. Lengel was taken to the University of Toledo Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead at 6:35 a.m., the newspaper reported.

Toledo TV station WNWO reported that police have surveillance video that may have captured the shooting but declined to give details of what is on the video. Police are working on the assumption that that shooting may have occurred after a robbery, according to the report

Lengel opened the CrossFit studio eight months ago, WNWO reported. According to the studio’s website, Lengel achieved a CrossFit Trainer Level 1 certification. In July, Lengel finished sixth at the 2012 Reebok CrossFit Games in the 55-59 masters division

Friends and others have left condolence messages on the studio’s Facebook page. Saturday’s visitation and Sunday’s service will be held at Waterville (OH) Community Church.
