Reception Fun

Last night at the opening reception, the magazine staff had a wonderful surprise. The founder of the magazine, Todd Logan, showed up at the reception. I had invited him to come to the show since we are kicking off our 25th anniversary celebration at this show, but he wasn't sure he would make it. I'm so glad he did. I enjoyed hearing his perspective of the industry and the magazine from when he was here. Many things are still the same--clubs focused on retention and bringing in new members, but other things have changed--more clubs out there and more express and franchised clubs.

Todd's been out of the fitness business and the publishing business for more than 15 years now, but he still was able to find people at the reception that he knew from his almost 10 years with the magazine. For those of you who remember Todd, he know lives in Chicago and he's a playwright. As a matter of fact, he wrote a play that was directed by Olympia Dukakis.

The reception room was filled last night with several hundred people, most of whom stayed until the wait staff started packing up tables at 7 pm. In fact, I didn't leave until 7:30 pm, and about 50 people were still in the room talking. That's what this show is all about -- networking and learning from each other.
