Keeping Up with the Obamas

President Obama and first lady Michelle Obama have been busy creating awareness for better fitness and better fitness club benefits for all.

This week, Mrs. Obama helped launch the renaming of the President's Council on Physical Fitness, Sports and Nutrition, which was formerly known as the President's Council on Physical Fitness and Sports. The emphasis on nutrition in the new title is related to Mrs. Obama's "Let's Move" campaign aimed at curtailing childhood obesity.

In a less publicized move earlier this month, President Obama extended benefits to same-sex partners of eligible federal workers, benefits that include access to fitness centers. According to The Washington Post, a limited number of intelligence and financial regulatory agencies will be able to provide tax reimbursements for gym memberships to same-sex partners.

We've seen several stories on fitness involving same-sex partners and families, most recently our article on the University of Memphis offering same-sex family memberships. Last year, we reported on same-sex membership issues in Minnesota and Idaho. This will no doubt continue to be an issue club operators will follow in the weeks and months ahead.
