Southern Oregon University in Ashland is planning to begin construction later this year on a 58,000-square-foot student recreation center.
The project will be built adjacent to McNeal Pavilion, the university’s athletic facility, which will undergo a major renovation and expansion at the same time.
Students voted in 2012 to raise their fees to pay for construction and operation of the recreation center. The $20 million referendum included $17.7 million for the recreation center and $2.3 million for Title IX projects.
The center will have a two-court gym with a suspended two-lane running track, a single-court multi-activity gym, two group exercise rooms, a cardio/weights and plyometric area, two racquetball courts, administration offices, locker rooms and support spaces.
The university is aiming for the construction and design of the combined project to receive at least LEED gold certification.
