Coastal Carolina University to Build Student Rec Center

CONWAY, SC -- Coastal Carolina University (CCU) received approval from the South Carolina Budget and Control Board to build a $35 million student recreation center on the site of the school’s current intramural fields.

The 130,000-square-foot facility will house both a recreation facility and a convocation center that will host CCU’s basketball and volleyball games, as well as intramural activities.

The rec center will feature an indoor track, fitness and weight rooms with new equipment, a rock climbing wall, a commons area with a juice bar and a new student bookstore.

“We are fortunate to be in a position to embark on these building projects in a time of general economic downturn,” David A. DeCenzo, university president, said in a statement.

The school’s building projects will be funded through its share of a one-cent sales tax approved by Horry County, SC, voters last November, as well as a capital project fee that’s part of CCU student tuition and private funding.
