Arizona State University Receives Gold Certification in LEED Program

The Polytechnic Campus Sun Devil Fitness Complex at Arizona State University has received a gold certification under the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) program.

The 61,000-square-foot fitness complex in Tempe, AZ, was completed in January 2013. The project cost almost $26 million and was funded from a student services fee in the fall of 2011.

The project received 17 out of 19 points for optimizing energy performance on its LEED scorecard, according to the university. Solar panels and a solar pool heater boosted the project to a perfect score for its ability to create onsite renewable energy.

"This significant project has allowed ASU to provide a state-of-the-art fitness environment for our students and to embrace sustainable design and technologies—especially in energy conservation," Bruce Jensen, interim associate vice president of ASU facilities development and management, said in a statement.

In addition to an outdoor pool with lap lanes, the complex consists of weight and fitness areas, soccer and softball fields, three multipurpose studios, new gyms, racquetball courts and an expanded health services department.
