Town Sports International (TSI), New York, will close one of its Philadelphia Sports Clubs on July 31.
The club in question is in the former Ardmore Theater in Ardmore, PA, according to Mainline Media News. A spokesperson for TSI confirmed the closing to Club Industry.
The theater opened in 1926 and closed as a movie theater in 2000, according to the Mainline report. Two years later, TSI renovated the theater and opened the club.
In April, TSI CEO Bob Giardina said in a call with analysts that the company would consider closing clubs in the second half of the year, mostly in suburban areas. The Ardmore club in Philadelphia fits the suburban club category.
"This will enable us to consolidate a portion of these members into our existing clubs, while reducing our club operating expenses, such as occupancy and payroll costs," Giardina said in April about the company's intentions.
TSI currently lists six Philadelphia Sports Clubs on its website, including the Ardmore club.
