YMCA EYES PEAK FITNESS FACILITY IN WINSTON-SALEM

WINSTON-SALEM, NC — The YMCA of Northwest North Carolina is in final negotiations to lease a closed Peak Fitness facility in Winston-Salem, NC, the organization announced last month. YMCA officials said they plan to turn the former 55,000-square-foot Peak Fitness building into a full membership Y branch. In addition to fitness equipment, the branch potentially would offer health and wellness programming, youth programs and a baby-sitting area.

SOLDIER DIES OF HEATSTROKE DURING ARMY FITNESS TEST

COLUMBIA, SC — A 19-year-old soldier stationed at Fort Jackson, SC, collapsed and died of heatstroke while taking the Army Physical Fitness Test last month. Pvt. Jamal Britt, of Edgewood, MD, was a week away from graduating basic training when he collapsed Oct. 7, the Army said. He was assigned to C Company, 3rd Battalion, 13th Infantry Regiment. The Richland County (SC) Coroner ruled his death was caused by heatstroke.

MISSOURI UNIVERSITY OF S&T DEDICATES REC CENTER

ROLLA, MO — The newly renovated fitness center at the Missouri University of Science and Technology, Rolla, MO, was dedicated last month during the school's Homecoming week activities. The dedication marked the completion of phase one of the $7.4 million renovation to the 35,000-square-foot fitness facility. The updated facility includes new cardio and weight equipment.
